Nonprofit Drug and Alcohol Recovery Serving The Greater Houston Area

About The Wheelhouse

The Wheelhouse is a nonprofit recovery community dedicated to helping men break free from drug and alcohol addiction, rebuild their lives, and return to society as responsible, productive, and hopeful individuals. Through our structured, spiritually centered, recovery programs, we provide the tools, guidance, and support needed for lasting recovery.

Our Mission

The Wheelhouse partners with donors and volunteers to provide a supportive environment and recovery tools where men can free themselves from the grip of alcohol and drug addiction to return to society as functional, useful and responsible members.

Our Legacy

The Wheelhouse began with one man’s transformation and a mission to help others find the same freedom.

H.B. “Hub” Carroll was a tough Deer Park boilermaker known for his towering height, worn-out overalls, and long beard. But behind his rugged exterior was a powerful story of redemption. Hub’s life was radically changed when he found sobriety through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Determined to give back what he had been given, Hub opened his home to another man struggling with alcoholism in 1952. That simple act of generosity grew into a lifelong mission. By the mid-1950s, he was using his welding shop and a neighboring house to create a safe space where more men could begin their recovery.

Twenty-five years later, with support from W.F. Wooster and R.D. Butler, The Wheelhouse was officially established as a nonprofit. Hub’s vision was clear: provide men with the structure, accountability, and community needed to rebuild their lives free from drugs and alcohol.

For decades, we have carried forward Hub’s legacy of living the 12th Step, service to others. What started with one man opening his door has become a spiritually centered recovery program that has helped hundreds of men overcome addiction, reunite with their families, and return to their communities as healthy, contributing citizens.

Today, The Wheelhouse stands as a testament to Hub’s unwavering belief: that with the right support, lasting recovery is always possible.

Men in Search of a Second Chance

Who We Serve & How We Help

We serve men in the Greater Houston Area who are ready to commit to a structured recovery process. While many arrive at The Wheelhouse during life’s most difficult moments, they find a community built on accountability, hope, and the power of transformation.

Our program is demanding because we believe real change happens when men are challenged, supported, and empowered to do the hard work of recovery. We set high expectations to help residents achieve lasting success.
